Great Explorations
Philosophy
Great Explorations was born out of a desire to offer families an alternative type of full-day summer camp on Nantucket. Lizie Hagenstein, owner and director, is a family therapist who has developed this program with the health of children as a priority.
We believe that children thrive in healthy and balanced environments and that summertime often works against families in that regard. With the longer days and lack of routine, children are often overwhelmed and tired. Camps typically keep kids 'on-the-run' and in the sun all the day with little regard for their overall health.
Time and again I hear parents' concerns about camps not keeping up with sunscreen, sending their children home hungry because their lunch had fallen in the sand (once again), and cranky because they are too exhausted to be otherwise.
Because we are a small, family-run camp, we are able to give more individualized attention and provide children with what they need throughout the day. Kids at Great Explorations have a great time, learn a lot, and grow both socially and emotionally!
